Winter Wedding Dos and Don’ts
No matter the season, weddings take time to plan in order for your special day to be beautiful. However, snow, cold weather, cold sharp air, and clouds may put a damper on your special day, but only if you give in.
There is no need to despair over cold weather and snow because there are some things that you can do in order to make your winter wedding cosy, beautiful, and entirely special.
Winter Wedding Dos
Use Colour
Colours are the means of providing warmth to your wedding venue, so make sure you use them. The best colours for this occasion. We love the use of mustard yellows, rich reds, purples and forest greens. You don’t have to go holiday-themed but use colours that are appropriate for the season.
Dress in Style
There are people who will tell you that you need to wear certain fabrics or silhouettes to match the season. But, you are in charge of your wedding fashion and it is perfectly okay to wear whatever you want. However, make sure you don’t get cold if you are spending some time outside and some faux fur can help with that.
The same goes for the men of the wedding. They don’t have to rely on heavy coats if you’d rather not. Pick an amazing suit but maybe go for a 4 piece, something that has room for long johns (yes, I said it) or a tweed.
Also, don’t forget the accessories, because they will only complete your winter-look. If you do want to match the season, consider some dark gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, emeralds, or jade. You can see some wonderful options over at the Moon Magic Shop.
Make the Reception Extra Warm & Welcoming
It is okay to have some outside elements on your wedding day but the reception should be inside. Come on now, we live in Manitoba, don’t even consider hosting a reception outside in -40C. Let’s be real here friends, it’s not a good choice. Heated tent or not.
If your guests have to go from a ceremony location to a different reception location they’ll need a warm-up when they arrive.
Have servers greet the guests with a warm cider, coffee, or tea. Provide options. Also, candles. Lots and lots of candles. They’re welcoming and create such a lovely atmosphere.
Also, consider extra warming courses like soup, chowder or a few serviced options.
Winter Wedding Don’ts
No Holiday-Themes here
The biggest holiday of this season certainly is Christmas, but that doesn’t mean you have to incorporate Christmas decorations into your wedding. It is your special day, after all, and the decor does not have to match the time of the year. The wedding date does not require you to use colours such as green, red, and winter white. But if you do want to commemorate the holiday, you can always incorporate a few smaller pieces of decor.
We don’t suggest you go big and bright with lime greens, bright oranges, etc. but you don’t need a red and gold wedding “just because” it’s December or winter.
Don’t Spend too Much Time Outside
Everyone loves an outdoor wedding, but it might not be a good idea for a winter one. Since the temperatures can drop really low (-40C), it is not a good idea to make yourself or your guests freeze outside. So, try and minimize the time spent outside and limit it to just a couple of magical picture shots of you and your SO and your bridesmaids and groomsmen.
No one wants to travel far in the snow.
Don’t opt for some remote places. Why? Well, remote places may become inaccessible due to snow, ice, or winds. So, be reasonable and pick a more accessible location, somewhere where you know that everyone can access without paying too much, without travelling on icy roads, and somewhere where you feel comfy.
Yes, the location can look amazing in the summer but consider the wild winter storms we have and how people might cancel last minute due to the roads. Also, consider your vendors, and if they will be able to travel in those conditions as well.
Weddings are a wonderful time for you to celebrate with your guests. Winter weddings can be extra magical – if planned well. Work with the season, the snow, and have some fun with it too.
